Nivel Austriaco D

I have followed this trail  View more

This is a fairly difficult climb, but well worth it. If you are a decent climber, in pretty good physical condition and do not have a fear of heights, then I would grade this a 'moderate' in difficulty. If you can't check all three of those boxes then this is a 'difficult' climb.

This was my first real via ferrata climb, but not suitable for beginners or children. Multiple portions are vertical climbs, however (for fairly experienced hikers or climbers) there were only 1-2 moderately challenging 'pitches' where footholds/handholds were challenging.

The route is very well designed. While this climb could be VERY challenging for someone uncomfortable with heights, it was only moderately challenging for someone who is confident in their physical ability and comfort with climbing.

Unbelievably gorgeous scenery. The ladder/stairway is great, but there are many more sections that are beautiful views of the lake, glacier and surrounding mountains too.

On the backside of the summit you can hike down without the use of via ferrata carabiners or harness. I lost the trail once though, so make sure to keep an eye out for the Austrian flags that are painted on rocks, they are the waypoints.

I had a bit of trouble finding the 'destination' to put into my location apps, so here are the coordinates for the parking lot that the bus drops off at--it is directly next to the tram/gondola that takes you up to the trailhead:
    47.533320, 13.496740
"Gasthof Gosausee" is the restaurant at the bottom of the tram/gondola, and next to the lake.

I took a train from Vienna to Attnang-Puchheim (stayed at Hockner Plaza Hotel, highly recommended), another train to Bad Ischl, then a bus to Gosau. Easy commute, roughly 35 euro one-way.

Overall this was a bucket list hike/climb. If you aren't afraid of heights, in decent physical shape, and can climb a ladder you will probably be alright. I met two Brits at the tram and climbed with them, one was very slow climbing (he was afraid of heights as well but charged the climb like a champion), and the other was very slow on the hike down the backside, and it took us 6 hours in total.

    Hi Scully,
Yes, I did the climb 20 October 2019. The weather was perfect, sunshine and 16 deg celcius until we made the summit at 1:30pm, then it turned overcast and windy. No snow anywhere on the trail.
