From a remote car park at the start this walk is a circuit of the upper Nire Valley in the Commeragh Mountains. There is a farm access bridge over the Nire River that is straight forward to use, but second river crossing, one of the main tributaries of the Nire should be undertaken with great caution. The is frequently a rope across beside some well spaced stones, but after heavy rain the river is above these stones. One across there is a gentle climb eventually to Coumfea. On older maps the area is referred to Knockaunapeebra (Mountain of the piper). The area is flat a featureless so be careful with navigation. From here the track leads to Carrignagower and spectacular views over most of Tipperary. Next comes the decent to the Gap above the source of the Nire River. Come care is needed with footing on the track or with stones well hidden in the high heather. From the Gap the track back to the car park is relatively easy
