Waypoints

WP01
Start outside Ye Olde Monken Holt pub. Alternative starting point by the information board and the marble drinking fountain (not in use) on Hadley Green opposite the CYMA car wash. Go via Christchurch Lane, Sunset View then across St Albans Road and on public footpath leading to Calvert Road. Just before Calvert Road turn right on tarmac path crossing Byng Road then continue to Cavendish Road. At Cavendish Road turn left then right along Old Fold View. Although there is a path along the edge of the field, it is not a public right of way and it has a wet muddy section unless the weather is very dry. At the western end of Old Fold View turn right along Grimsdyke Crescent to the end of the road. Then turn left on a public footpath along the edge of the field to Galley Lane. Turn left along Galley Lane and then right along public restricted byway to Arkley Lane. Turn right along Arkley Lane and continue for approx. 1.75 km to WP02

WP12
Wash Lane Common Nature Reserve and the back way in to nearby South Mimms Service Area

WP13
Turn right off Wash Lane and look for footpath sign in the hedge. Bridleway continues straight ahead but is not recommended as it follows the stream

WP19
A permissive path turns right and goes parallel to the road. This avoids a road walk along Baker Street. As this is a permissive path not a public right of way, it could be withdrawn in the future.

WP20
At this point, turn left along the public footpath that comes in from the road then fork right and continue on the footpath up across the field

WP31
Path comes out onto road here. Cross road, turn right and walk along the pavement for 1.6 km then turn left along Dury Road

WP32
Optional detour to Monken Hadley Church. The church tower was added in the early sixteenth century. There is a cresset, or fire beacon on tower which was used for signalling and it is still lit on special occasions.
