Vägbeskrivning

The National Wildlife Refuge sits on the south side of US-41 and runs from Collier Seminole State Park about 5 miles to Port of the Islands. In that 5 mile stretch, there are 4 canoe trails headed south into the marshes. The trails are navigable only during the wet season or after heavy rains. Two trails, 1 and 3, are accessible from the roadside. Trail 4 is protected by a guardrail, and Trail 2 is from a 20-car parking lot at the “Marsh Trail.”

Launch from the parking area into a Spartina marsh when the water is high, and after a short distance, you'll see the observation tower. We always make this loop in a clockwise direction. Port across the marsh trail just north of (before) the tower and continue to the north paralleling the marsh trail. There is engineering flagging hung from mangroves along the route, but the trail should be easy to follow if you pay attention to your GPS.

There's a heckuva view from the observation tower, and if you get there before sunrise, flocks of birds taking off.

Take a break at the Marsh Trail pad at the halfway mark, but beware of deer flies and other insects. We use Repel 40.

We rate the trail as difficult because it really is possible to take wrong turns.
